On Tuesday 10/18, the Syosset School District approved the addition of Eid-Ul-Adha and Eid-Ul-Fitr to the list of official school holidays. The effort was coordinated by Dr. Uzma Syed and members of the Syosset community.  The Syosset community worked with Muslims and Non-Muslims to collect signatures for a petition to have the district recognize both Eid holidays as district holidays and have school closed in observation.  The proposition was discussed and unanimously approved during the Board of Education meeting and will be enacted for the 2017-2018 school year.

The effort was a testament that religious and cultural diversity is still valued in America and our communities are willing to support the needs for Muslims in those communities. Masjid Al-Baqi encourages our local congregants to work with their local school districts to help them understand the needs of our children. Insha Allah, the Syosset community hopes that this gift from Allah(SWT) will motivate other Muslims in all of Nassau County to be more involved in their local communities to drive change.

Syosset High School, named a ‘Blue Ribbon School of Excellence’, was ranked 42nd – in the US – by Newsweek in 2012.
